Educational Issues
Accountability:
Last year, only 5 out of 13 elementary and middle schools made adequate yearly progress. We need to apply basic management principles to education programs and plans. We can no longer simply mandate that teachers do the impossible and hope for the best. Reaching a goal demands an explicit and well-supported implementation plan. I will advocate for those types of plans and ask that they include periodic, statistically valid evaluations. Failure is not an option!
Funding:
We have to Create not Cut programs. I will advocate for forging public/private partnerships to help shore up programs, a cost-benefit analysis of current programs and for giving the voters an opportunity to vote for state permitted new revenue streams.
Educational Equity:
I want to ensure that our children’s educational opportunities are equal whichever school they attend. Schools with more at-risk students should have more district trained volunteers sent to them. Mentor programs at those schools should be increased. Successful PTAs should share information, and ideas about getting grants and increasing fundraising.
Teacher Training:
The district needs to provide more training opportunities and consistency in the classrooms, especially classrooms where there are at-risk children. I will advocate for more and better training opportunities for teachers.
